Being a soul of many miles and experiences, The Stoned Crow knows the importance of budgeting.  Below you will find a few tips that ‘Ol Crow has supplied us with, that may save you a few dollars here and there.  The money you save with these tips may give you an extra few days/weeks on the road. After all, that’s what we are all here for!!

                        Budget Guide

Food

  • Buy in bulk . Rice , pasta and/or potatoes

  • Use Fresh Cream or Tinned Tomatoes as sauces

  • Learn how to make pancakes (Certain hostels offer free morning pancakes)

  • 4+ weet-bix in the morning to set you up for the day

  • Re-fill a bottle of water for drinking . This will save you heaps on soft drinks . (Soft drinks will only make you thirstier in hot weather)

  • Eat Bananas

  • When cooking “If in doubt add Black Pepper and/or mixed herbs

  • R.S.L clubs & League clubs offer very reasonable meal prices

  • Fruit is excellent in Oz so take advantage of it and enjoy.  Large markets in outer suburbs are the cheapest

 

Accomodation

  • Most hostels offer cheap weekly/long stay rates

  • V.I.P. cards are accepted in almost all hostels

  • Remember campsites can cost you between $5-20 per night

  • Again, most hostels will provide you with free accommodation for doing a few hours work i.e. garbage , clean up , reception etc.

  • Many hostels offer free breakfasts

  • Shared accommodation is available all over

Boozing

HOT TIP: RULE #1 for backpacking drinking is “ Get pissed before you go to the pub”

  • R.S.L. clubs and Leagues clubs have very reasonable drinks prices ($1.50 – $2.30 per drink)

  • Casks of wine $10 per cask of wine. WARNING : The mother of all Hangovers may follow !!

 

Smokers

  • Buy a pouch of tobacco – up to 8 times cheaper

  • Alternatively, buy “Holiday” ciggies

 

Clothing

  • Markets

  • Salvation army / St. Vincent de Paul

  • Target / K-Mart

  • Portman’s Factory Outlets

 

Travel 

  • Check out the various bus companies . If you know your route beforehand it will be cheaper to pay for your trip ‘up front’

  • If you are a bit strapped put up an add in your hostel . e.g. ‘Girl seeking lift to Brisbane , See Susan in Room No.6’

  • Buying a camper van may save you heaps as you may sleep in the camper .

  • Many international flights to Oz offer internal flights inclusive . These flights can be up to 5 times cheaper than if you buy them he re
