Looking for a job, sucks !! It's just something you gotta do. Australia is a vast and varied country, which can send you working a mile below mining in Kalgoorlie, mango picking in Northern Queensland, a snowy mountain Ski lift operator, pulling beers down the pub or delivering pizza.
Here's a few pointers on how to get the work you want
Office work - check out the various agencies.
Bar/Cafe jobs - it's a case of rocking up in person or scanning the local papers
Construction - Pays good for the noble backpacker. Check labour hire companies and Irish Bars
Fruit picking - this can be done all along the south and east coasts at various seasons so check out our guide...
HOT TIP: Always check the local papers for classifieds
If you have a trade or profession take head of the following;
- Make sure you have a couple of copies of an updated CV or resume and references
- Get a copy of your CV on disc or the web so you can email it to companies.
- Register with online employment services such as:
seek.com.au
monster.com.au
mycareer.com.au
- Get yourself a Tax File Number TFN as quick as you can from the Tax Department. Without this no one is gonna pay you!
- Get a bank account as soon as possible. This helps with getting a place to stay too (see Getting a flat).
