Getting your own place
Rental accommodation can be a quite trying experience.
HOT TIP: Get you Tax File Number (TFN) from the Tax Department straight away and get a bank account as soon as you can. This makes life a whole lot easier when it comes to paperwork. If you don't do this you may be in for a struggle.
Decide where you want to stay (i.e. what suburb?). Check for local transport, shops, the beach location, etc.
You have to call to the various real estate agents in that particular area so take a look at the listings we have.
Some real estate agents can be very unhelpful to John or Jill backpacker. This is because they are wankers. You must struggle on, nonetheless
Alternatively check the local papers for share accommodation and look out for the mid week sections in all the papers and the big accommodation sections at the weekend.
In Australia, you may need to have Australian references for applying for a house/flat. It would be good if you have these together before you set out.
What will it cost?
- You will need generally to pay 4 weeks rent in advance
- A minimum bond of 2 weeks rent.
- As an average guide rent ranges from $50 to $120/week in cities and less in rural areas
HOT TIP: The bond could be as much as 4 weeks which makes it all very expensive. Make sure the bond is lodged at the Department of Fair Trading as a precaution. This is the norm and guarantees you will get your full bond back if you don't trash the place. Ring 1800 422 021 for details.
